What Are Some Physician Jobs?

There are a number of places that physicians might choose to work. There are a number of different physician jobs. So, if you are thinking about pursuing a degree to become a doctor, know that there are many places that you can go to get a job. Let’s look at some of those occupations.

One of the first areas that some have gone to get a job after they have become a licenced physician is at a hospital. They need plenty of them. Now, if you specialize in an area, that can open doors to you. They have doctors of all practices in a hospital. There will always be a need for a hospital as well.

Others might just practice general medicine. There are a number of areas that these who practice general medicine can work. For instance, there are some who work in the hospital, but they choose an area such as the emergency room. Here you work with diagnosing what something might be or getting a second opinion from a doctor with a specialization.

While we’re talking about general medicine, you might consider working in an after hour clinic. This is where you can do the same thing as you would in an emergency room. What happens here is that you work to diagnose problems or then you refer them to other doctors who can effectively take care of the problem as it might be too big for such a clinic to handle. This works the same for those who work within a free clinic.

Some of the doctors might go to open their own practice. They see regular patients and do the things that you might think about when you consider being a doctor. This would be giving shots to kids. Helping those who get strep throat and much more. When you do this, you are still using all those things that you learn.

There are others who might go on and change career paths after they have done things like the ones listed above. Some might offer their services overseas. They might go to those under developed areas to give them the same medical care that they have given to those in their own home town.

Some do something far greater. They give free aid to those who need it the most, but will otherwise never get it. For some, they might help out in times of a natural disaster. Others might go overseas with organizations and give medicine to those who don’t have the resources to otherwise get this.

Many of these doctors are asked when they have worked in a field long enough to become public speakers. Some are then inspired to write books. They are inspired to share what they know so that others might learn from them and advance science. There are a whole lot of things that they are called to do.

So, you see, there are a number of physician jobs out there. Some only think of the most basic ones, but there are a number of jobs that one can do. Employment – a Two Party Contract

If you are watching the news regularly, you might hear analysts talking about rising unemployment rates and fewer employment opportunities, which are probably only two symptoms of a slowing down economy.

And even though most of us have pretty good general idea of what employment means, what is the proper definition?

Employment is a two party contract, with one of the sides being the employer and the other one the employee – the employer can be a large multinational company, bank, small shop owner, basically any person or organization that needs workers to further his commercial enterprise; however, non-profit organizations and charities can be employers as well.

Today, the conditions under which people are employed are very different from the conditions that existed even one hundred years ago; in many countries good labor legislation is in place, which legislation is meant to protect the worker’s rights, as well the rights of the employer.

The employer takes up employees and pays them either fixed salary or a wage; the exact amount of the remuneration is usually negotiated between the two parties, but in some countries the minimum wage or salary is defined by law. The employer is also responsible for providing the worker with working conditions that are not hazardous to his or her life or health and quite often is also responsible, either fully or partially, for paying health and retirement premiums. The circumstances under which the employer can terminate the contract are, typically, also regulated by law and when this is done due to downsizing, the employer might be liable for paying compensation to the workers that are let go.

An employee is a person, who takes up employment and provides labor in exchange for payment or other form of compensation. In most instances the success of a commercial enterprise is determined by the owner’s vision, the state of the economy, the management, and the quality of the workforce. The employee has certain rights and obligations that are regulated by law and by the contract that he or she has signed; usually the employee has to work certain amount of hours every week, perform his or her tasks and duties, look after the employer’s property, serve faithfully and follow reasonable and legal orders from his or her employer. If the employee wants to terminate his or her employment contract, usually he or she has to give an advanced written warning to the employer.

The employer and the employees alike have to know their responsibilities and quite often laws are in place, which laws make provisions against sexual, disability or racial discrimination. Apart from following the legal requirements, it is in the best interest of the employer to provide sound and pleasant working environment, in order to avoid high turnover and it is in the best interest of the employee to perform his or her duties to the best of his or her abilities.

Pursuing a Career in Occupational Therapy

A Basic Overview

Occupational therapy (OT) is the 9th least stressful job in the U. S. A. According to a recent “U.S. News and World Report.” Occupational therapists work with disabled people to help them be more independent in daily life. Disabilities can be due to stroke or other medical condition, as well as congenital.

Patience and superior interpersonal skills are essential qualities of an occupational therapist. Many times clients will balk at doing therapy exercises at home (or even during therapy). They may become frustrated and angry that recovery is not coming as fast as they had hoped. This is where the OT must listen to and encourage the patient along the road to recovery.

Necessary Education

To work as an OT, an individual must have completed an accredited master’s program including a minimum of 24 hours of field work. After coursework is completed, the national licensing exam must be taken by all OTs wanting to practice. Successfully passing the exam gives the OT the right to add “Occupational Therapist Registered” or OTR after his or her name and signals to future employers and patients that the occupational therapist understands and is able to apply knowledge to the people requiring therapy.

Bachelor’s degrees are usually held in the sciences, liberal arts or social sciences, such as anthropology or psychology. Master’s degree classes include behavioral science, physical and life science, along with learning the application of the skills being learned.

At the present moment, there are no too many occupational therapy programs at the master’s level and even fewer at the doctoral level. The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) has approved just 150 masters and combined bachelor/master’s degree programs and only four doctoral programs…

The top OT programs in the United States, according to “US News and World Report” are, from one to five: Boston College – Sargent, Washington University – St. Louis, USC University of Illinois – Chicago, Tufts – Boston, University of Kansas Medical Center.

Predicted Job Growth 2008-2018

Ranked in the top 50 best careers of 2010 by “U.S. News and World Report, ” occupational therapy as a field is projected to grow much faster than average.

A significant increase in job growth, 26%, is projected between 2008-2018. Just 105,000 OTs were working in 2008. In 2018, 131,300 OTs are expected to be working.

Average Earnings

The predominant location for occupational therapists to work is in hospitals. Other settings include schools, home health care services, self-employed in private practice, nursing homes and mental health/addiction facilities.

The median salary in 2008 for an OT was $67,780 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Top paid OTs made over $98,000 and the most poorly paid OTs made less than $42,000 a year.

Home health care services pays therapists well with a median salary of $74,510 every year. Nursing homes pay OTs less well at $72,790. School districts pay occupational therapist even less at $60,020 a year. In the future the occupational therapy jobs will be most abundant and will likely pay the best are jobs working with the elderly.
