Reiki originated in 1922 Mikao Usui on the Japanese mountain called Kurama. After three weeks of fasting and meditation, Usui claimed to have received the ability healing without energy depletion. Usui then moved to Tokyo where he developed what became known as the 5 Reiki Principles, which include: do not be angry, do not worry, be grateful, work with integrity, and be kind to others. By adhering to these five principles on a daily basis, according to the Principles, you will invite good fortune into your life as well as medicine to heal all illnesses.
There appear to be some very common ways to practice Reiki, including whole body treatment and localized treatment. Whole body treatment involves having the client lie down on a massage table while the practitioner applies hands in various positions for up to 90 minutes, resulting in a feeling of overall contentment and peacefullness. Localized type treatments are where hands are placed on a specific area of the body, usually that has experienced some type of trauma or injury. This lasts for about 20 minutes on average, and is helpful in healing the injured area.
A very common method of practicing Reiki is to combine treatment with Alternative Healing.
